D'André Santos
With Les Grands Ballets Orchestra

With Alice in Wonderland, choreographer André Santos presents his very first creation for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, in a boldly neoclassical style. A dancer with the company since 2017, he delves into Lewis Carroll’s rich and imaginative world, drawing from both Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass to weave a sensitive, vivid narrative.
From the White Rabbit to the Mad Hatter, and the Queen of Hearts to the unforgettable Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the iconic figures of the 1865 tale punctuate the journey of a young girl in the midst of metamorphosis, swept into a world where all sense of direction is constantly shifting. Here, Alice is no mere observer. She moves forward, stumbles, and grows in a three-dimensional universe that is both dreamlike and disorienting: Wonderland.
Set to an original symphonic score composed by Montrealer Airat Ichmouratov, Alice in Wonderland unfolds as a journey in which young and old alike can lose themselves and, perhaps, find their own path. A dizzying and fascinating universe, where the surreal meets poetry, and where logic is redefined.

This ensemble comprises 55 highly skilled musicians and soloists. Our orchestra has been playing a major role in the success of Les Grands Ballets for over 30 years.
