Ton Sourire by Yemen Blues

Duration
14 min.
Ton Sourire examines the thin line that separates us from being the individuals who we really are, and the person that we try to be in order to fit in the parameters stipulated by society, to be ‘’successful" or to make relationships work. The question is how far can we really compromise? How far and for how long can an individual run away or suppress his true nature? Is it worth the sacrifice and the constant inner struggle? At the end of the day, the external factors that influence us keep changing constantly while we remain who we are.
Nuances explores the different dynamics between opposing energies, their attraction and repulsion as well as the capacity to find perfect harmony and balance, complimentary of each other. It is inspired by the idea of "soulmate connections"; always finding their way back together.
Jat Mahibathi explores the magical power resulting from humans combining their faith and strength together. Each one of them living the journey and the experience differently, but all of them walking the same path and working towards the same goal. This piece is inspired by the coexistence of different cultures and religions and the ability to respect and accept the differences between them while embracing the common values that brings them closer. This piece is a celebration of humans sharing faith and coming together.

I based this choreography on four words: simplicity, line, beauty, challenge.
The idea came from one of the exhibit at Gallery Deux Poissons in the Belgo building: the beautiful art work of Patrycja Walton and her glass dresses hanging on mannequins. I thought ‘’Wow....maybe I can do something with that...bring them (the mannequins) to life’’. Such interesting ideas always come after a glass of very good Catalan Cava.
I would like to thank my friend Vincent McBride, the owner of Gallery Deux Poissons, for supporting my projects, the arts and Les Grands Ballets.

"Human time does not turn in a circle; it runs ahead in a straight line. That is why man cannot be happy: happiness is the longing for repetition.”

One night I had a dream in which my father was filled with anger. As I stood facing him, time seemed to freeze. When I looked into his eyes, I knew he was fighting something grand and complex; I knew that darkness had overpowered him.
“I love you dad.”, I said.
“I. Love. You. ” said my sister who was standing nearby.
In return, his body became transparent and, like a jar filling up with liquid, it started to fill up with light, beautiful glowing light.
Inspired by that dream, this piece explores that only by loving and forgiving we can awaken the light where it was once forgotten.
