This class, designed for autistic preteens and teens ages 9 to 14, offers a gradual introduction to ballet technique. Students learn the fundamentals of classical vocabulary and are introduced to barre work as well as basic port de bras. Playful activities allow them to explore expressive movement qualities. They also develop posture, strength, and flexibility through exercises performed at the barre and in the centre.
The goal of the course is to provide a creative space that fosters body awareness, spatial understanding, motor skills, rhythm, creative expression, and socialization. Each class is led by two facilitators of the National Centre for Dance Therapy, who are experts in dance and in supporting diverse populations.

"With kids like ours, if they're put under a lot of pressure, they shut down. The fact that they are learning something here with staff who really get it, and can still communicate with them without putting them into a box is very helpful."
-Participant’s father
