At Gemino, youth aged 5 to 17 grow in an environment where adapted recreation becomes a true tool for connection, self-expression, and personal development. Through dance and inclusive activities, each child is welcomed according to their strengths, needs, and individual pace.
The organization’s inclusive approach emphasizes diversity and living together. Dance allows young people to build relationships, develop a sense of belonging, and strengthen their self-confidence. The goal is not performance, but rather the joy of participating, shared experiences, and the discovery of oneself and others.
To encourage understanding and participation for everyone, several practical strategies are used during activities. Instructions are adapted through pictograms, visual demonstrations, and simplified explanations, sometimes sung or rhythmically presented. Facilitators also prioritize repetition, respect for information-processing time, and an experiential approach where youth learn through movement and direct experimentation with the instructor.
This approach is based on the idea that every child learns differently. Facilitators therefore support youth with patience, flexibility, and kindness, without assuming that learning is understood immediately.
The activities also take sensory integration into account, an essential element in participants’ development and well-being. All seven senses are engaged, particularly the vestibular and proprioceptive systems, which play an important role in balance, movement, and body awareness. To support these sensory needs, various interventions may be offered, such as massages with balls, deep pressure activities, the use of different textures, or activities that promote relaxation and self-regulation.
Facilitators also adapt tasks according to each young person’s reality, whether related to hypotonia, hyperactivity, or anxiety. Clear, consistent, and predictable rules are put in place to help participants better understand expectations and feel safe within the group.
Sensory comfort also plays an important role in the learning environment. The space, sounds, textures, and amount of material used are carefully considered in order to reduce overstimulation and encourage concentration and independence. Sometimes, a simpler and more uncluttered environment allows youth to participate more fully in activities.
At the heart of this approach is a relationship of trust between youth and facilitators. Activities are designed to combine enjoyment, structure, rigor, and flexibility while valuing each participant’s potential. Facilitators believe in the abilities of young people, adapt to unexpected situations, and embrace spontaneous opportunities that emerge within the group.
Through inclusive dance, Gemino demonstrates that a welcoming and adapted environment can become a powerful source of confidence, social connection, and personal growth for every child.
