Anne Armit has been involved in dance for over 45 years; she is recognized as one of the top in her field in North America. Trained at the National Ballet of Canada, she worked freelance until establishing her own costume studio in Toronto, producing costumes for film, TV, theatre and dance. One highlight was producing costumes for Canada’s first production of Cats.
Armit held the position of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Director of Wardrobe from 1989 to 2013. Her legacy is one that rejuvenated and transformed the costume style of the RWB. Her vision allowed for the aesthetic evolution of traditional masterpieces as well as groundbreaking new works; she was a major contributor in the costume design for Peter Pan, Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet, and Twyla Tharp's The Princess and The Goblin, to name a few. Armit's work propelled the wardrobe department to a world-class reputation and established a solid foundation that inspired, mentored, and nurtured today's generation of Wardrobe Director, Cutter, and Seamstress.
As well as designing and building just under 100 costumes for Prima Ballerina Evelyn Hart, Armit designed and produced for many other companies in Canada and the USA. She later moved to Stratford, Ontario, to further design and produce. She also designed for the Hong Kong Ballet, Beijing Academy, Guangzhou Ballet, where she won a Gold Award for best design in South China.
